We came to Italy in September 2006 with hardly any Italian language ability, especially our children. Jamie then 5 years old had no knowledge of the language and we went through a tough first 2 months at school. Now with about 6 months of school life behind him, he has gotten a firm grasp of the language, thanks to the fact that there are no other Japanese at school and also because very few teachers can speak English.
This video was taken at the end of April, and it's not often that I get to see him interacting totally in Italian, though I must admit it is becoming more frequent nowadays as he can pick up friends in the playground or at the park. Wataru and I are no experts in judging his language ability but according to teachers and friends it's perfect....well I guess they mean very good!
Yes, we are very proud of him, and perhaps a little jealous at the same time...
